This past weekend, I attended Operation Home Cooking – an event that takes place in conjunction with the Metropolitan Cooking and Entertaining Show. Operation Home Cooking had it’s inaugural show last year with 300 Military spouses. This year more than 2,500 military spouses were in attendance and were honored with cooking demonstrations by local chefs, military chefs and ended with an engaging, sometimes hilarious demonstration by Guy Fieri…..
What I loved about Guy was that his sous chef was his teenage son. Guy is known for his support of cooking with your kids and as his son tenderized meat, diced onion and even assisted with his Dad’s microphone – Guy took the time to share fabulous cooking tips and funny anecdotes while also sharing his passion for the military community. What I also found wonderful was his gracious personality. He was given a variety of goodies from vendors in the cooking show and throughout his presentation, he gave them away to wounded warriors in attendance.
Guy Fieri found a new fan in me.
Now if only I could perfect his Pork Tenderloin recipe that he demonstrated….it was wrapped in bacon….need I say more about it’s potential for tastiness?
We ended our day tooling around the Metropolitan Cooking and Entertaining Show. Part of our day included a pass to the show full of fabulous vendors where we nibbled on breads dipped in Wild Mushroom Porcini & Truffle Oil and sweet fudge and cake bon bons. At lunch time we went to grab a bite in the small cafeteria-like area where tables were set up and who did we see in the Crepe line?
That’s Dr. Jill Biden there folks…..and she was in line, like everyone else, waiting (secret service hovering around of course) and she sat at the tables among other attendees – but not before she was kind enough to take a picture with some military spouses. She put down her crepe and snapped a photo with us as well as other spouses. She even took the time to ask where we were stationed which I found very considerate.
She didn’t have to take that time but she did. She didn’t have to sit in a line when her handlers could have grabbed a crepe for her. She didn’t have to sit among all the other attendees but she did. I found her very down to earth and that was encouraging.
I’m so glad my friend Tamara had the courage to go up to Dr. Biden’s Secret service guy and ask if we could approach her without being clotheslined while doing so…..yes, we asked if he would “clothesline” us if we approached her….we managed to get a smile out of a secret service guy….good to see it’s not all serious work with them. It was one of the highlights of our day. Whether you agree with the politics of the current administration – their spouses have been huge advocates for military families and for that, I am so appreciative.

All in all, it was a wonderful day that honored the service of military spouses which I think is much needed. Because the truth is folks….we serve right along with our active duty spouses…and it isn’t always so glamorous.

What an amazing experience. That is so cool. And I love that she asked the secret service guy that. The FBI and ATF work on the same floor in our office building. Those guys are tough.
