7 Things I’d Tell My Younger Self {Listable Life}

by Nicole on January 23, 2012

Listable Life got off to a great start last week with over 20 linkers! I went to each and every one and read so many fabulous lists that helped me get to know you all better. The most popular prompt last week was 10 Songs That Remind Me Of My Youth and HOLY FLASHBACK was it fun to read those posts!

Good stuff.

So, for this week’s Listable Life, I gave the following three prompts:

5 Things I’d Tell My Younger Self

5 All Time Favorite TV Shows or Movies

5 Fashion Trends You Wish You Had Not Taken Part Of.

{ Pssst….it’s not too late to write up a post and link up below!  Don’t forget to grab the button in my sidebar!}

So, while I was tempted to do the fashion trends post, I felt I did a good job showing off my fabulous fashion sense from my youth with last week’s Listable Life. Although… admittedly…you will be seeing a bit more of that fantastic fashionista in this post as well.

Apparently, embarrassing myself is becoming a trend.

Five  Seven Things I’d Tell My Younger Self

1.) I’d tell  this girl….

Just. Say. No. to good intentioned girlfriends of your father. She means well…but she truly has no idea what she’s talking about.

Perming the bangs? Seriously?!

I’d also tell my younger self how to use a flat iron.

{Ahem}

In addition to that, I’d say, when you smile, you are still pretty – even if your teeth are all jacked up. You can’t do anything about that right now, so own it. Confidence is half the battle. When you’re 24 and done putting yourself through school – you’ll finally make that long awaited change and it will feel good to have earned and paid for every last cent of that transformation.

Oh…and those two boys you crushed on, who didn’t give you the time of day… you’re way cuter than their wives will be.

Just sayin’

2.) Your college years will be fun. But take it easy on the partying  M’Kay? There is such a thing as too much fun and the stupidity that comes with that..and… you are not this cool….

{Every time I see this photo…I die laughing…it’s too much}

Also, I’d say,  keep up the solid collegiate work, because being an honors grad, while working full time to support yourself will be one of your biggest accomplishments.

Just lose the blue glasses. And the middrift. And the ridiculous face.

Moving on….

One more thing about college, do not hesitate to take that month long trip to the UK for an internship. It is going to be one of the best choices you make, even if you are still paying off those school loans well into your thirties. Be certain that you take a ton of pictures and write in a journal – because you will forget a lot as you get older and you will be pissed.

Fountains in Trafalger Square                    Hostel in Bath                                         Near the Castles in Edinburgh

3. ) You will have a beautiful wedding day, in spite of your limited budget. It will come together in a way that fulfills your dreams. But don’t cut out the videographer. That friend you are depending on to take the video, he’ll blow it and it will be crap.

Spend less on something else.

Also, marriage is kind of a big job. Not gonna lie.

And you should travel more as a couple before having kids.

4.) Speaking of kids. They will change your life…. and make you less forgiving of your parents. It’s ok to let them and your anger go.

You will have a family of your own where you get to break that cycle of disfunction and the gaping hole in your heart will finally be filled up.

 5.)  Stop worrying about what other people think, it’s a waste of your time and they really don’t think about you that much.

6.) You’ll continue to have challenges throughout your life – but you will find a renewed sense of self in the process.

7.)  Write things down more. You are kind of absent minded. You will need the stories when you are old and senile.

What would you tell your younger self?

Isn’t that picture hysterical? I’m actually a bit mortified just looking at it posted up there for all to see…apparently I am not listening to my own advice from #5. ;-) Looking forward to your post!

Hey, at least you were able to show your mid-drift at some point! ;)

And I totally agree with #5! Wish I’d learned that lesson earlier on myself. Great list and thanks for hosting! :)

It’s funny, I wrote #5 and all I’m doing right now is worrying about what people are going to think of this post…LOL. Apparently old habits die hard.

Thanks for linking up! I love your TV Shows….and miss so many of them!

I agree with several things you mentioned. Not caring what anyone thinks? Wish I’d reached that point a LONG time ago. It would have saved me a long of headaches in high school. That photo? Totally cracking me up. And totally awesome. ;)

I have really loved looking back at old photos for these Listable posts….they have allowed me to reflect and enjoy the good and horrible in the way of fashion. Ha! You are equally as lovely! I hope you’ll join in on the Listable Life – it’s not as much fun without people joining me! :-)

Hi.

Clicked over after your tweet about offensive word here. I like to be back up, you know, assure people it’s all fine.

It’s all fine…I went through this twice..

What could have offended?

I swear, people wake up looking for stuff to find wrong in other’s posts.

This is all good here,girl, in fact: adorable.

You are fantastic! Thank you for stopping by. I edited the word that offended because, she had a point. I used the word “retarded” when referring to my face in the blue glasses picture….and…while it was for comedic purposes – she was very upset about it. I didn’t think that word had the same connotation it used to have – honestly, it didn’t even come to mind as potentially offensive – so I felt bad. And while I don’t take editing lightly because I think we should all have our “voice” and it should remain our own, she had a valid point and changing the word didn’t change the overall tone of the writing…so I adjusted it. Thank you, thank you for being so supportive. It really means a lot!

BAHAHAHAHA I find I have very little in common with people who actually looked good in 7th grade. That year was just awkward on so many levels. It’s one of those things that makes us stronger….plus, it’s never good to peak too early. ;-)

#5 is one that I have to remind myself of all the time. It’s a tough one to stick to. :-) Thanks for joining in! It’s much more fun having other posts to read on the same topics.

I needed #5 today. Sometimes I forget that the person who probably said something purposely hurtful is probably not thinking about how much they said affected me. My husband seems to let things roll off of him so easily, I wish I could do that too. I should keep telling myself that over and over again, eventually it will sink in, right?

I think women and men are just different….vastly different :-) And you’re not alone in letting the thoughts and words of others affect you. I think the best thing we can do is to remind ourselves of what we do well and that we, it in our own right are valuable. Thanks for linking up this week!

I like the one about travelling more before having kids. I am VERY single at the moment but this has always been my idea for the first 5 years of marriage! Enjoy each other :) Although the old I get the less likely 5 years of just enjoying each other child free gets.

BTW I was tagged in this 11 things thing. As a relatively new active member of the blogging community I struggled to tag people so I tagged those whose blog I read regularly who it appeared hadn’t done their 11 things. Hence I tagged you! http://onekindofme.blogspot.com/2012/01/11-things-about-me.html

Traveling before kids is ideal! But, I will say, with one….it’s totally doable. Just strap on a baby backpack or Moby Wrap (you’ll love that for a newborn when the time comes) and go. Once you move beyond one….all bets are off. I’m pretty much a hermit these days ;-) And, thanks for the the 11 things, I have a post drafted from another lovely blogger who tagged me….I should probably get it done, huh? :-) Thanks for thinking of me and WELCOME to the blogging world! Make sure you check out the SITS Girls (www.sitsgirls.com) and Mom Comm (www.momcomm.com) They are two great resources for new bloggers. :-) I hope you’ll link up with us next week!

Such a great idea..there are so many things I wish I could tell the younger me…instead, when I was teaching, I told the high school students. Of course, they already knew everything so it fell on deaf ears, but maybe it hit one or two of them.

I am SO like that too with my students, but at the Elementary Level. I had a student who was dealing with a family life much like the one I grew up with and I was always trying to encourage and impart (age appropriate) wisdom on him. I hope some of it stuck!

Bath was one of the highlights of our trip. The hostel there was fabulous! Now….Blackpool…that was a terrible stop to add to the itinerary.
