On 9/11 in 2001 I was standing in a third grade classroom where I was a student teacher. We all sat in awe watching the news while our kids were at PE as the second plane hit the World Trade Center. I’ll never forget the days that followed or the school year when I would be reminded of the children left without parents on that day when a lovely young lady walked into my 5th grade classroom a few years later.
September 11th is a day that many of us who lived through it will never forget, especially those who were touched by it in a more personal way, although I can’t imagine anyone in the country wasn’t emotionally shaken by the events of that day.
When I think about perseverance, hope and strength to endure life’s hardships, these are the quotes that come to mind. Some are new finds, other’s have been a part of my arsenal of wisdom for years and today I share them with you and I hope that one day, if my girls need them, they will find them here at that time.
“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.”
― Maya Angelou
Yes. I know my self better because of the many challenges I’ve endured and I often feel I am better for it.
“The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.”
― Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture
“She is clothed with strength and dignity, and laughs without fear of the future” Proverbs 31:25
This one reminds me to lead my life by making good choices and ones that I can be proud of – it also reminds me to do my best to live life without so much fear, although admittedly it’s easier said than done.
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those crushed in spirit” ~Psalm 34:18
When life throws a curveball or threatens to break me in two, I hold onto inner strength and while I’m not a largely religious person, I do have a feeling there is a larger power at work which has carried me through those really tough times. There have been more than a few that I should have crumbled to and did not.
“Anyone can give up, it’s the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that’s true strength.”
This one reminds me to have courage and face life’s challenges head on because we are stronger than we often give ourselves credit for. My life has had many speed bumps and road blocks and there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. This is a reminder of that fact.

Listable Life is a weekly meme shared by myself and Sharon over at Mom of 6 . Each week we all write to one of two prompts that are “list” in nature and then link up. We then hop around, read and comment on one another’s blogs in an effort to find new faces and places to read in the blogosphere. Head HERE to find our upcoming topics! Make sure to add the button below to your post so it’s easy to see which post belongs to the linkup and in an effort to encourage others join in!
